Hard Liquor Tops The Charts Beer Popularity Remains Steady This Autumn by Dan Newcomb According to a Gallup Poll cited in a NY Post article Americans are drinking more hard liquor now than ever before The poll states that The number of drinkers preferring hard liquor 31 is the highest figure ever recorded in Gallup s tracking of booze preferences of US adults since asking the question in 1993 besting for the first time the 29 of Americans who drink wine Of note as well is that younger drinkers are more likely to enjoy beer and liquor whereas older drinkers prefer beer and wine On premise operators should analyze if their customer base tends to be older or younger and ensure that their menu offerings are in line with the data For those establishments popular amongst the younger generation some fun fall inspired cocktails will be a valuable addition to your menu whereas those establishments more frequented by an older crowd may want to try out a few cocktail offerings but highlight the beer and wine mainstays available Off premise owners should stock their shelves with plenty of hard liquor options and take note of which are selling more quickly than others Beer still remains the most popular alcoholic beverage across the board according to the Gallup poll and MassPack provides some insight on upcoming beer trends from BrewBound a source of beer industry news According to BrewBound fall shelf resets will look much different than in past years including the rising popularity of lager style beer unflavored beers dominating total beer sales and 12 pack and single serve cans proving the most popular packaging format Because other types of alcohol are rising in popularity both on and off premise operators should ensure that their bars have on hand and that their shelves are stocked with what consumers want namely lager style unflavored beers In particular off premise operators should also stock up on 12 pack and single serve cans of these beers This research is helpful to both on and off premise operators as they stock their shelves and prepare their drink menus for the chillier months ahead Ensuring that your business offers what consumers want is imperative for a successful upcoming season THE ADVISOR MAGAZINE 3 www LiquorLicenseAdvisor com

DRUNKIN DUNKIN CONTINUED What s your reaction to these new products hitting shelves this fall Will spiked coffee and tea options dilute the already saturated premade cocktail market Will the pre existing spiked tea brands suffer Do liquor store owners feel that these new beverage options are worthy of hitting their shelves this autumn As the days grow cooler and shorter it will be interesting to track if Dunkin can expand into the liquor industry THE ADVISOR MAGAZINE 5

BY MICHELLE HANSFORD Our Team here at Liquor License Advisor often receives the question of whether someone must be a U S citizen to obtain a liquor license in Massachusetts Legally they do The way the law currently stands the manager of record for a business must be a U S citizen to obtain a liquor license which means that a non citizen cannot be listed as the manager of record if he or she requires a liquor license for his or her business Here in Massachusetts the license owner must actually be a state resident as well to go on recordas a manager or owner of a liquor license This citizenship restriction originates from a 1933 liquor law and some are speaking out about changing the law to allow non citizens to obtain liquor licenses According to an Axios Boston report dated August 18th a bill filed by Sen Patrick O Connor R Weymouth has surfaced which proposes to change this state law and to allow non citizens who have legal status to become the manager listed on a liquor license Lawmakers have until next year to move this bill forward THE ADVISOR MAGAZINE 9 The argument for changing the law according to Axios is that Small business owners supporting the proposal say current law effectively excludes immigrant owned enterprises and hamstrings American business owners who want to promote non citizens to management positions Additionally proponents of the proposal argue that The restrictions add red tape and expenses at a time when businesses are struggling to retain workers and keep costs down The proposed bill will surely ignite some controversy as some feel that this law is outdated and discriminatory while others will support the strict guidelines that have been instated for so long Although this bill will not affect the number of licenses available it would affect who can obtain them and how easily they can do so As we keep a close eye on this we will keep you updated on all news surrounding this proposal and how it will impact businesses like yours across the state We re here for you
