AS THE SEASONS CHANGE,VACCINATIONS ROLL, AND REOPENINGSBEGIN.Throughout the past year, with statemandates, the reduced hours have hurt theseshops, as has the 25% capacity limit. This, along with cost of operation increases tokeep stores clean and safe and reducedservices from wholesaler, has been tough onmany retail liquor shops. For wine lovers, we hope to keep these Momand Pop shops in business, and hope to seean upwards curve for both the success ofdelivery, and resilience of owners.“Many wine lovers I’ve spoken with believethat developing a relationship with a trustedlocal wine merchant is a great way to gainvaluable knowledge of wine and regions fromaround the world. They also feel that it’simportant to support small business, thuskeeping the local economy strong. With theadvent of out-of-state and online liquor sales, many brick and mortar shops have had tomake major adjustments just to retain theirexisting customer base.” (Telegram &Gazette).by Dan NewcombTHE ADVISOR MAGAZINE | 7

Spirits matched last year's value tally exactly, demonstratingthat retail demand continues to sustain itself at the higher levelsprecipitated by the shift to the off-premise. The collective beer/cider/flavored malt beverage segment saw amodest gain of 0.4% that was driven by RTDs and FMBs; corebeer sales were down 2.2%, while hard seltzers were up 26.4%and hard tea gained 44% over this time last year.” (NewsBreak). With Texas’ recent reopening, and other states progressingthrough their phases of reopeningrestaurants and bars, it will beinteresting to keep an eye on thenumbers. Another aspect to noteis the spike in hard seltzer sales aswell as prepared cocktails. Hardseltzers now carry 40% of themarket, prepared cocktails makingtheir mark with 3%. The advantageof the prepared cocktails is thatthey’re made from spirits, makingthem more premium, and carryinga higher alcohol content and pricethan seltzers (and higher tax). They also appear to a slightly olderdemographic, in the 30-to-44 year-old range, compared with the 21 to29-year-old bracket for hardseltzers. While seltzers stilldominate, the premade cocktailsare up and coming, expected to bethe next big thing. Off-premise is still anticipated tothrive and stay superior for thetime being, until the comfort ofleaving your home beats thecomfort of staying in it. What brings these partnerships (Uber & Drizly, BevMo & GoPuff,Southern Glazer’s & ReserveBar) together is the impact of thescale tip the pandemic has brought in societal drinking habits, from on premise to off premise. It has now been a year around thesun since we stocked up on everything from toilet paper, to cardsgames, to ridiculous amounts of alcohol and everything inbetween. Focusing on the light at the end of the tunnel, offpremise liquor still rises above, where celebrations of vaccinedoses are in order, restaurants reopen, and Spring slowlyapproaches. “The majority of the softening in overall sales valuecan be attributed to the wine segment, which trailed last year’sbenchmark by 8.1%.
